  Although it might have a breathtaking view, people like me go there so please also recognize it as a church and not just an attraction.

  Perched on the edge of St Mary's Mountain in Altus, Arkansas, and overlooking the Arkansas River Valley, St Mary's Church is surely one of the most beautifully situated churches in the United States. And the inside is beautiful as well, reflecting the tastes of the original Swiss and German settlers that came to this part of the country over a century ago. Current (2014) pastor Fr David Bellinghausen OSB cares for this little treasure and his parishioners with grace and Benedictine learning. Over the last several decades we have been annual visitors to Arkansas's Mt Nebo State Park sometime around Christmas, but we always make the 50 mile drive from Mt Nebo to St Mary's for Mass and always feel inspired after our visits. Even if you're not Catholic, it's worth a detour from I-40 to see the church for its location, its architecture and design. And if you are Catholic, I urge you to visit there to worship.
